The inverted pyramid is a style of news writing where the most important information appears at the beginning of the article, followed by supporting details in decreasing order of importance. Imagine an upside-down triangle: the widest part at the top contains the key facts, and as you move down, the details become less critical.
This structure is especially useful because readers often skim news stories and may stop reading after the first few lines. Editors also benefit since they can easily shorten articles by cutting from the bottom without losing essential information.
